There are many clients available for both Mac and Windows
operating systems. The important thing to look for is DIKU and CIRCLE code compatibility.
One of our favorites for Windows is called ZMudd. It has support for Mud Sound
Protocol which we use in Time of the Shadows. TINTIN++ is the classic
from the Unix operating system, and it has been ported to Windows quite successfully.
There are several versions available. Some work much better than others. Below
is a list of clients you can download from our FTP site, or other their respective
web pages and other pages lists of clients.
Zmud
: This ShareWare client is MSP compatible. That means that it enables
you to hear sounds while mudding. It is has 16 and 32 bit versions.
Download our sound files to use MSP.
Mud
Master: This FreeWare client is very similar to TinTin++ and the Beta
version has MSP support. This is a Win32's application.
WinTin95
: A succesful FreeWare import of the tintin++ code to the win95/98/NT platform!
Pueblo:
A free Windows client with wonderful possibilities that is full of bugs and
no longer supported.
MUD
clients for Macintosh
The Time
of the Shadows FTP server has some shareware/freeware clients available
but they may not be the newest versions.
Time of the Shadows now uses Mud Sound Protocol (MSP) to send sounds during game play. You must have a MSP compliant client in order to take advantage of this feature. Zmud, Wintin, and Mud Master (Beta version), which are listed above, are MSP clients. You also need to get the appropriate sound files used by TOS. They are avialable via our FTP site.
TOS.ZIP
: Extract these .wav files and place them in the directory of your choice.
Just make sure to tell your client where to look for them. In Zmud there
is a Sound Directory setting where you select "Other" and type in the path to
the folder. If you use Mud Master (only the Beta version supports MSP),
then you will have to type "/msp (path)" to tell it where the files are and
then type "/msp on" to enable MSP processing.
There are many other Telnet and Terminal programs available for Windows and Winsock (requiring TCP/IP) other than the poor example distributed with Windows. Below is a list of some freeware or shareware programs. Visit one of the suggested links for more info and examples. Some of these files are stored as executables, but others are in .ZIP format. You should get Winzip, Aladdin Expander, or some other extraction tool to use them. I have tried all of these programs, and I have found that they operate at different speeds depending on the machine they are on. For instance, Simple Telnet runs very very slowly on some machines I've been on (even really fast systems), but then it runs great on others (even some old 486's). If one of them seems slow, just try another one.
TeraTerm
is a freeware package with a lot of cool features like ANSI and custom configurations.
This is by far my favorite Telnet application for Windows and it is FREE!
Get it from the Tera
Term Home Page.
One
solution is to upgrade your Hyperterminal (comes with Windows) to Private edition.
Download the upgrade from Hilgaeve's
Web Page.
Ewan
is another freeware program with ANSI support. Unfortunately it is only a 16bit
application. That means that it will run under Windows3.x. Win95 is designed
for 32bit but will run 16bit applications. Download it from the Ewan
Web Page.
QVT/Term
is another good Shareware package with good ANSI support. Download it from their
site.
A
great site for 16bit or 32bit applications of all kinds is Stroud's
Consummate Winsock Applications page.
